Can Words Change Our World?

Tips for Rapid Relief.

Many years ago, when my children were young and I was struggling to balance caring for, with dealing with my father’s cancer, attending night classes, and teaching full-time, I didn’t have a mantra. I believed that my life was a struggle and it continued that way. One day, an elderly colleague about to retire was asked how he was doing. He replied with the same phrase every time: “Every day is a holiday and every meal is a banquet!” I laughed and thought it was funny and ridiculous, but I decided to adopt this belief and change it to: “Every moment is a gift and every person is a friend.” Soon, my life transformed. Even the doctors who cared for my father showed kindness that we had never seen before. I was able to pause and cherish my time with dad and had a tremendous time. I realized that what we tell ourselves repeatedly becomes our reality.I became a firm believer in the power of self-talk and worked with everyone, including my students to refrain from self-defeating words.

It takes practice but doable. I really wanted to learn how to write grants, but there was a voice- mine, that whispered grant is a tough skill, English is not my native language, applications take time… I worked to change that belief. Soon, I mustered the courage to write and won. People like to call me the Grant Queen, which I find absurd. If I were a queen, why would I write? However, I am willing to accept Grant Jedi.

A grounding mantra is a short phrase or statement that we can use to refocus and reframe our thoughts. It can be a powerful tool to help us stay present, calm, and centered, especially when we’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed.

So how do you come up with a grounding mantra that works for you? Here are a few tips:

  1. Make it personal: Your grounding mantra should be something that resonates with you and your values. It could be a quote, a mantra from a spiritual tradition, or simply a few words that capture what’s most important to you.
  2. Keep it positive: Your grounding mantra should be a positive reminder, not a negative one. Avoid phrases that focus on what you don’t want or can’t do, and instead choose words that inspire and empower you.
  3. Make it short and sweet: A grounding mantra should be easy to remember and repeat, so .keep it brief and to the point.

Here are a few examples of grounding mantras to get you started:

  • “I am strong and capable.”
  • “I am present and at peace.”
  • “I am grateful for this moment.”
